Volunteers spent part of their weekend sprucing up a playground in Western Queens.

They raked leaves and picked up trash at the Ravenswood Playground.

It's all part of the City Parks Department's "Spring Cleaning" initiative.

The month-long program will dispatch eight thousand volunteers and parks employees to clean up local public spaces in preparation for the warmer weather.

"It's sort of like your house. You always like to keep it clean because you're living there and you like to see the environment around you looking pretty and bright," said Dalya Cordeiro, a volunteer.

"It just falls in line with getting your, yourself ready to be outdoors for the spring, " said Dorothy Lewandowski, the Queens Parks Commissioner. "So that kids can have a safe and fun time in these great urban environments," she continued.
