A tournament in Arverne gave girls a chance to show off their basketball skills.

Girls from around the City squared off in Police Athletic League's fifth annual Raphelle Memorial Classic Friday. The three-on-three double elimination tournament honors Raphelle Sims Lakowitz a young lady in Queens who loved sports.

The competition was divided into two divisions; one for fifth and sixth graders and another for seventh and eighth graders.

Organizers say it's important to remember that sports are for both boys and girls.

“We want to make sure the girls understand they should be involved in sports, that they understand that they can achieve anything,” said Sonny Santana, the program manager for the Police Athletic League’s Education & Program Development Department.

“A lot of boys are judging girls,” said participant Katie Bonilla. “’Oh, they play like a girl!’ But we actually get to prove how good we play because we can actually be better than most boys that play.”

The winning teams took home Raphelle Memorial Classic trophies.
