Mayor Bill de Blasio says the upcoming citywide ferry service will be a big help for people in far-off parts of the city.

The first wave of stops in Astoria, the Rockaways and South Brooklyn are expected to open this summer.

The main port for the ferries will be the Brooklyn Navy Yard.

Soundview in the Bronx is expected to get its ferry station next summer.

It will be one of the last neighborhoods in the five boroughs to get on a ferry route.

But residents say they're excited about getting a quicker commute to work.

"I guess it would shorten my commute, probably by about 45 minutes," said one Bronx resident.

"It would bring a lot of stability to the neighborhood. Transfer station would be great, better for me because I work in Long Island City, Queens. I think it's a good deal," added another Bronx resident.

A ferry ride will cost the same as a subway or bus ride at $2.75.
