A City Council member who represents Queens is asking his constituents to join the fight for cleaner energy production.

Councilman Costa Constantinides has launched an online petition seeking to end the use of a certain fuel in power production before City Council’s current deadline of 2030.

The proposal seeks to accelerate the ban by 5 years, citing that one of the oils still being used is one of the dirtiest on the market and has been linked to air pollutants that pose risk to public health.

"These plants are surrounding our communities, surrounding our parks, next to our public housing developments and we are going to stand with our neighbors and say this is unacceptable we can’t let this continue for our kids. They deserve to grow up without having to worry about the effects of asthma and this is a step in that direction," said City Council Member Costa Constantinides (D-Queens).

Two of the city's five power plants are located in Western Queens, one is in Astoria, the other is in Long Island City.

A public hearing on the bill will take place April 24th at City Hall.
