In response to President Trump's executive orders on immigration, the Legal Aid Society is providing assistance to immigrants in and around Queens.

NY1's Clodagh McGowan filed the following report.

"Immigrants are the life blood of the New York City area," said Sarah Gillman, a supervising attorney with the Legal Aid Society of New York's Immigration Law Unit.

Gillman is part of the team that worked around the clock to help immigrants detained at Kennedy Airport, after President Trump's executive order temporarily banning travel from seven Muslim majority nations went into effect last month.

"To see people detained at the airport and in imminent threat of removal, separated from their friends, their families and everything that they thought was going to go smoothly when they came to the airport, was quite jarring," said Gillman.

While the airport protests have come and gone, Gillman says it's important to continue providing legal assistance.

"We want to ensure that we have a very strong presence in the community, that we still have a presence at JFK," said Gillman.

The Legal Aid Society set up a hotline for people dealing with immigration issues at Kennedy Airport. In addition, there is also information available in eight languages to let immigrants exactly know what their rights are.

"Unfortunately what we see sometimes in communities, in immigrant communities in particular is there's a lot of misinformation and there's a lot of fear," said Gillman.
