Local leaders wrapped up Black History Month with an annual breakfast to honor people of color who have impacted the Jamaica community.

The Press of Southeast Queens and The Queens Tribune held their annual Black History Awards Breakfast Tuesday. This year's honorees included the Deputy Chief of the N Y P D's Queens South Patrol, the general manager of Jamaica Performing Arts and more.

Police Commissioner James O'Neill delivered the keynote address and touched on the legacy of African Americans in the Department.

“We've held a lot of events in the NYPD over this past month celebrating over a century of Black history in the New York City Police Department,” O’Neill said. “[We] remember law enforcement pioneers like Sam Battle and Moses Cobb and honor the thousands and thousands of African Americans who have served in uniform since.”

O'Neill also reiterated the importance of neighborhood policing and treating immigrants with respect.
