An annual South Jamaica tournament held Wednesday encouraged kids to exercise their bodies as well as their minds.

Hundreds of students from across the City competed in the Police Athletic League's Tournament of Champions Wednesday. Kids were challenged to build paper tables strong enough to hold history textbooks, duel in Connect Four and more. They also faced off in fitness, basketball and dance challenges.

Organizers say the Tournament of Champions helps kids learn about healthy competition.

“Sportsmanship and competitiveness are important to growth, to development, becoming mature,” said Dana Wheeler, Director of Education and Program Development for the Police Athletic League. “And so we like to give our kids the chance to compete to be their best.”

“It was really fun trying to do all these exercises and make new friends with people,” said young participant Ore Ogunfuwi.
