As immigration issues continue to make headlines around the globe, a new program at LaGuardia Community College is training the next batch of U S citizens.

The college teamed up with Catholic Migration Services to prepare immigrants for their citizenship test. The free, four-night-a-week bootcamp has English and civics lessons and helps immigrants through all of the necessary paperwork.

It lasts 11 weeks and is expected to prepare about 200 New Yorkers to become citizens.

“The classes are life-transforming,” said LaGuardia Community College President Gail Mellow. “It really takes a person an enormous way towards thinking of themselves as citizens of the U.S. They're able to vote, they're able to participate. They're able to be here permanently and make their stake in the American Dream.

Applicants must be permanent residents with a valid green card.
