Student veterans at Queens College now have a newly-renovated space to gather.

The Veterans Club, Queens College President and local elected officials cut the ribbon to the new Student Veterans Center on Monday. Back in 2014, the organization Student Veterans of America gave Queens College an $8,000 grant to renovate the center.

The lounge is now equipped with a new computer, along with new furniture and appliances.

Queens has the highest population of Veterans in the five boroughs. Officials with the college say the space is crucial for the community of student veterans on campus.

“Ultimately it provides a space so that the student veterans can feel a sense of comradery and connectedness that they miss coming out of the military,” said the organization’s staff advisor, Dennis Torres.

“It’s a celebration to give something back to our veterans here on campus,” added James Marone, President of the Veterans Club.

The lounge took about a year to renovate.
