Some residents lend a helping hand to remember Martin Luther King Jr. NY1's Shannan Ferry has the story from Hollis.

Some volunteers are taking a hands-on approach to helping others.

They spent their day off building a new home for a family in need in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

"Martin Luther King was not just about racial justice, I mean, he was about economic and social justice as well," said volunteer Daniel Hochman.

More than a dozen volunteers pitched in at a construction site in Hollis.

It's all part of the 18th annual "Building on the Dream Day of Service."

The event is organized by the NYC chapter of the non-profit group Habitat for Humanity.

"This is just really what it's all about, about giving back, doing something bigger than yourself, having faith in yourself and your community," said volunteer Alicia Santos.

Organizers said its also a great opportunity to develop new skills. You don't need any building experience to get involved.

"We'll teach you everything from using hand tools to, to doing tiling, to sheet rock whatever, whatever folks are interested in," said Vice President of Volunteer Services Jennifer Schwerin.

Coordinators said Martin Luther King Jr. day is one of the most popular day of the year to help out.

Volunteer Claire Francis said giving back is much more important than a few extra hours of sleep.

"Me being in my bed is great, but there's someone out there that needs a home where they can have that place to feel safe," Francis said.

Organizers said Habitat for Humanity shares a special connection with this holiday.

The groups founder' Millard Fuller drew some inspiration for starting the organization from Dr. King.
