Some struggling Long Island City families get extra help putting food on the table.

City Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer and Bishop Mitchell G. Taylor delivered more than 1,000 pounds of canned food to "The Bread of Life Food Pantry" Tuesday.

It was part of Van Bramer's seventh annual food drive.

His constituents dropped off donations at local library branches and at his office.

Van Bramer and Taylor say it's important to help people in the community.

"The need is greater than ever," the Councilman said. "People are stretched thin. And it's not simply homeless folks who come to these pantries. The truth is it's a lot of folks who are working. They're the working poor."

"These are people who are working everyday trying to put food on the table, send their children to school, go to work themselves," said Bishop Taylor.

The Bread of Life Food Pantry is open Tuesday through Thursday, noon to 3 p.m. It's located at 38-49 12th Street in Long Island City.
