A Queens street corner was co-named on Saturday to commemorate a turning point in Irish history.

Queens Councilwoman Elizabeth Crowley was among the local leaders to join local Irish Americans for an officials co-naming ceremony at the corner at 64th street and 53rd Avenue in Maspeth.

The intersection has been designated "Easter Rising Way".

The new street sign is a tribute to the 100th anniversary of the Easter Rising in Ireland, according to Crowley.

The rebellion is considered the turning point in the fight for Irish independence from the British.

"As a remembrance of the struggle of the Irish people which is not unique, a great struggle against injustice and equality and that's a struggle we still fight for both in Ireland and here in America," Crowley said.

Those behind the co naming effort said that the location for 'Easter Rising Way' was selected, in part, because of its proximity to Calvary Cemetery.

The cemetery is the final resting place for many Irish Americans and is home to monuments that celebrate Irish contributions to American history.
