A new health conference is shining a light on illnesses targeting immigrant community in Elmhurst.

'NYC Health and Hospitals Elmhurst' held their first ever Latin American Health Summit Thursday. Topics included ways to improve access to health care.

Doctors also discussed the affect of the Zika virus on the Latin American immigrant community and say now more than ever women and children need to be watched closely.

"The way you live your healthiest life is to make sure that you have information and that you're active in your role in healthcare. And so today is our way to bring our information to the patients, to the community," Israel Rocha, the CEO, NYC Health + Hospitals Elmhurst

"We have many people who travel back and forth and we want to make sure that we're aware of their concerns and they're aware of our issues," said Dr. Joseph Masci, the Director of the Department of Medicine, NYC Health + Hospitals Elmhurst

Doctors say pregnant women or those planning to become pregnant should avoid areas where Zika is common. They add, pregnant women should tell their doctors immediately if they have been to any of those areas.
