After years of waiting, students at an Astoria school will learn without interruptions from subway noise.

In the past, teachers have opened their windows during the summer and were interrupted by trains every few minutes.

Assemblywoman Aravella Simotas announced the installation of 31 air conditioners, with 10 more on the way, at PS 85.

The Department of Education added sound-asorbing acoustic tiles two years ago, but teachers and parents say it wasn't enough.

"When a train rumbles by here, you cannot learn. You cannot listen to your teacher. You cannot think," said Assemblywoman Aravella Simotas.

"We can't move the subway. We can't build a new building. But we can do something to mitigate a problem that has existed in this community for so many years," said Evie Hantzopoulos, Former P.S. 85 Parent.

Officials say the next step is to request sound buffers from the MTA.
