The family of a teen who was struck and killed at a busy intersection is demanding safety improvements.
NY1's Lyndsay Christian filed the following report.

Kevin Marin reflects on precious memories of his niece, 13-year old Jazmine Marin.

"Jaz was, her love was the most open, I think, she welcomed anybody with open arms," the grieving uncle said.

The teen died tragically at the intersection of 149th street and Cross Bay Boulevard Monday morning.

She was crossing the street with another teen girl when a car hit them.  Marin was pronounced dead at the scene, her friend, badly injured.  They were headed to Robert Goddard Junior High School, a block away.

"There are many ways to prevent this, many many many ways, and it hasn't been done and it's 2016 and someone died in 2012," Marin said.

The dangerous intersection has prompted Senator Joseph Addabo to press city again to consider its zoning structure, especially for the new school on Albert Road, which is slated to open in September 2017.

"Zoning for this particular school should be on the east side of Cross Bay Boulevard, thus keeping students and children on the safe side of Cross Bay Boulevard," Queens State Senator Joseph Addabbo said.

Senator Addabbo and residents say the intersection needs crossing guards to keep students safe and to prevent another from losing their life.

"There's tons of accidents on this corner always, with pedestrians and vehicles as well," Ozone Park resident James Dean said.

The NYPD says there are 34 school crossing guards assigned throughout the 106th Precinct, but they are not assigned to junior high schools. The DOT only provides guards for elementary and intermediate schools through the city's School Safety Program. A program, Marin says, needs to change.

"It's not something you need to think about especially when there are so many kids in danger," Marin said.

The DOT says it plans to make safety improvements to the intersection in 2017 which include restricting left turns to 149th Avenue, adding curb extensions and refurbishing markings on the ground.

Enhancements the Marin family hope will prevent another tragedy.
