City officials announced plans to demolish a former pool hall and build a brand new middle school last month.

Residents say the two story building on the corner of 48th Street and Barnett Avenue falls just outside of the neighborhood's historic district but it was a part of the original design.

Some residents say that building a school at this location will take away from the history of the site.

State Senator Michael Gianaris sent a letter to the School Construction Authority asking the agency to accommodate the community's concerns while planning the design of the middle school.

"Right now the kids are either going to schools that are incredibly over crowded or being asked to go to schools that are far out of the neighborhood and very difficult to get to which makes it more difficult for them to learn," said Gianaris, who represents the area.

An SCA spokesperson tells NY1 the agency will continue working with the community throughout the process to ensure the design serves the need of students in the area.

The new middle school seats will help alleviate overcrowding in District 30 and will provide an additional option for families.
