A family placed in a Jamaica hotel by the Department of Homeless Services says they're forced to live in unsanitary conditions. NY1's Clodagh McGowan filed the following report.

This family’s stay at the Jamaica Days Inn has been anything but a relaxing getaway. Ahimo Colbourne, his wife Grecia Cruz and son AJ are currently homeless. Originally from the Bronx, the city’s Department of Homeless Services placed the family in the hotel last week.

"They gave us dirty linen. That has blood on it. One sheet had blood; the other sheet had fecal matter on it," said Colbourne.

We checked in with the family over the course of two days.

During their stay, they’ve captured pictures of dirty linen, bugs and what appears to be a blood stain on the carpet.

Colbourne says the fact that there are only two twin beds for his family of three is a legitimate reason for transfer.

"We tried to speak to supervisors that are there and they're saying that they got their hands tied. They can't do nothing," said Colbourne.

The family says beyond the unsanitary conditions, the hotel's location is three hours away from the Bronx by public transportation. That means they're forced to travel for school and doctor's visits.

"I really don't like the situation because my school is really far away from where they're trying to place us," said AJ, Colbourne’s son.

But things are looking up. When we came back to visit on day two, Colbourne says their room is being fumigated. Meantime, they've moved to a new room with three beds. A Department of Homeless Services spokesperson tells NY1 the family is in the process of being transferred to a shelter in the Bronx and one of the DHS supervisors in question has been suspended.

"We're human and we have rights. And unfortunately everyone has their ups and downs and this is definitely one of our lows," said Cruz.

A DHS spokesperson went on to say, "We are committed to ensuring that homeless New Yorkers are provided with shelter and services that advance their health and well-being and promote human dignity, and any time these conditions or services fall short we will take swift action to make things right."

We tried multiple times to reach management at the Days Inn but were unable to speak with anyone authorized to comment.

As for this family, they say they'll finally be getting a good night's sleep knowing better days are on the horizon.
