A student at St. John's University in Queens was shot and killed in Chicago over the weekend.

Chicago police confirm Arshell "Trey" Dennis, 19, died after being shot on the city's south side on Saturday. Dennis was originally from Chicago, and had traveled there from Queens to surprise his sick mother on her birthday.

Police say a gunman walked up and started shooting outside the home.

Dennis's father is a Chicago police officer, but officials say they do not believe that was the reason for the shooting.

“I'm sure the people in his neighborhood knew he was a police officer, but there's absolutely no credibility that he was targeted because he was a police officer,” said Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie T. Johnson. “We think it's simply a case of mistaken identity. You got a kid going to St. John's University, doing what he should have been doing.”

Dennis was slated to head back to school at St. John's on Sunday.

One other person was injured in the shooting. No arrests have been made.
