A free performance by the Jackson Heights Orchestra at Travers Park hit a high note with dozens of residents like Peggy Bosco on Sunday.

"They are fantastic, you know it's a nice opportunity and it's great for the neighborhood," Bosco said.

It's all part of the 13th annual free 'Summer Sundays at the Park' Concert Series.

The Jackson Heights Orchestra is the first group involved to take the stage this season.

From music, to dance the community is treated to performances every Sunday afternoon.

"Sometimes, you live near someone for years and really don't do anything but nod hello to them, this will bring us together," said Diosa Borghese, who lives in Jackson Heights.

It's all organized by a local non-profit called the Jackson Heights Beautification Group.

The goal is to provide residents with a cultural experience they might not otherwise have.

"We serve a community that this is their vacation, coming to a park, and that says it all," said Edwin Westley, who is the secretary for the Jackson Heights Beautification Group.

Performers with the Jackson Heights Orchestra said they look forward to sharing their music at the concert series, because it gives them a chance to give back to their community.

"Orchestra concerts are usually prohibitively expensive to go to, so to be able to bring the orchestra to the community to come and hear music live, it's so different, and so beneficial," said Steven Rosenhaus, who is an Assistant Conductor for the Jackson Heights Orchestra.

Many the performers are based in Queens.

The last concert of the season is scheduled for August 28.
