Residents in one Queens community learned techniques Thursday to help them take control in life-threatening situations.

State Senator James Sanders sponsored a free self-defense class at a local church in Springfield Gardens. Participants learned different ways to disarm shooters from a self-defense expert and former Israeli soldier. Participants also heard from different security experts.

Sanders says just because Manhattan is often thought of as a terror target, it doesn't mean that people in other boroughs should prepare any less.

“They're going for the soft underbelly, Queens and other places,” said Sanders. “The outer boroughs where we have not become as security-conscious as some of these other places.”

“We can inform the people, the grassroots people who need to understand exactly what is going on so they can be safe in their homes, in their churches, in their daycares, their schools,” added Pastor Richard Moore of Holy Unity Baptist Church.
