Families in Far Rockaway took to the streets on Saturday to combat gun violence.

Rock Safe Streets, a program by Sheltering Arms, was the sponsor of the second annual Peace Fest at 54th Street & Beach Channel Drive.

The block party included a dance contest, arts and crafts activities and bouncy castles for the kids.

Organizers decided to hold the event in June to commemorate gun violence awareness month.

"Everyone can come out. We can enjoy the weather. We can enjoy each other and come together as a community. No violence, no shooting and say 'Let's stand together against gun violence’," said Amy Wilkerson, who works at Sheltering Arms and Safe Space NYC Inc.

Organizers also said that the summer months are usually the most violent for the area.

So, they wanted to create a safe place for people to hang out, without having to worry about hearing gunshots.

"We tryin' to stop it. We tryin' to teach the little ones respect and to keep their hands off of guns because that can backfire on the kids too," said Jonie M Kelly, a Far Rockaway resident.
