Queens residents can now enjoy new paths and other improvements to a portion of Flushing Meadows-Corona Park.

City council members and Parks Department officials gathered Thursday to cut the ribbon on improvements to Meadow Lake. The $3 million restoration includes infrastructure improvements to prevent storm water contamination, and thousands of new native plants.

The city's parks commissioner says it will help protect the park from future storms.

“This is part of an effort to really make this an amenity for this local community to walk, to bike, to enjoy the natural beauty,” said Parks Commissioner Mitchell Silver.

“In this part of the park, we've had a lot of flooding, the lake has become very cloudy and unpleasant, so this is an investment in making sure that the natural part of the park is still very nice,” added City Council Member Rory Lancman.

The project took several years to complete. The design phase began in 2011, and construction started in Janurary 2015.
