The House passed a bill Tuesday to honor two local leaders in the gay rights movement.

Politicians and activists have been pushing since last year to rename the Jackson Heights Post Office in honor of Jeanne and Jules Manford. The couple founded the LGBT rights advocacy group PFLAG, in 1972 after their openly gay son Morty was beaten during a protest.

Congressman Joe Crowley introduced a bill to rename the post office earlier this month, and the house unanimously passed it on Tuesday.

Senators Kirsten Gillibrand and Charles Schumer have introduced a bill in the senate, as well.

In announcing the House version's passage, Crowley said the Manfords were “instrumental in the fight for equal rights, and their legacy can be felt throughout Queens, New York, and the entire country.”
