A local all-girls school is getting a unique opportunity to close the gender gap in science, technology, engineering, arts and math.

The Young Women's Leadership School of Astoria will be getting a new lab.

Council Member Costa Constantinides allocated the money for the new $560,000 lab.

The lab will become a hub for graphic design, filmmaking, coding and web design.  There will also be a creation space for 3-D printing and Robotics.

"I saw a school that was doing a lot of innovative and exciting things  when it came to science. They were really interested and felt that this stem lab will add something to their school," Councilman Constantinides, said.

"We want to remove preconceptions, misconceptions of what women can do and what they can't dom and this is one way to get there," Principal Allison Persad, added.

A teachers lounge will be transformed into the lab. The school's principal says she expects construction to start next summer.
