A local lawmaker is joining in the efforts to get adequate funding for the Queens Library.

City Councilman Barry Grodenchik and Queens Public Library President Dennis Walcott held a story time and reading rally on Friday.

The goal of the event was to call attention to library funding included in the city's 2017 budget.

"People need the services. We've seen the tremendous growth with the six-day and the number of people who come through our library doors and we want to make sure that we have this available for all of our communities throughout Queens and throughout the entire City," said Dennis Walcott of the Queens Library.

Last year, the City Council restored $43 million of the $65 million cut from the city’s three library systems since 2008 in funding, according to http://www.investinlibraries.org/.

This year the city’s libraries, including the Queens Library, are asking for an additional $22 million.

They say the additional money would go towards opening all libraries 7 days a week.

"We need to do it now while the pressure's on," Queens Councilman Grodenchik said.
