Some middle and high school students are being encouraged to start thinking about their future.

St Johns University invited a former welterweight champion Shawn Porter, a local deejay and a businessman to speak to about a thousand students at their career symposium Friday. The panel was a collaboration between GEAR UP and FIRST Inc.

Speakers told the students about their dreams and aspirations when they were in elementary school and how they ended up in  their current careers.

"I hope these people leave here with a sense of motivation. 11 and 12-years-old is the time to begin thinking about their future." said Yvette Morgan with St. John's GEAR UP Program.

"Work hard for whatever you want,  you stay dedicated to it and you have faith that you can do it, you will succeed." said Former IBF Welterweight Champion, Shawn Porter.

Organizers want to encourage kids to start thinking about going to college.
