NY1's latest Queens Person of the Week is illustrating the importance of the hip-hop culture of the borough. She's doing it while inspiring young people, one brush stroke at a time. Leisha Majtan introduces us.

This mural of Jazz greats in St. Albans inspired Jocelyn Goode-Morgan to continue celebrating the rich musical heritage of Queens.

"Growing up I always saw that mural, it's on Linden Boulevard. And so I said how come there are no other murals? Other people have come after them. And that's what gave me the idea," said Jocelyn Goode-Morgan, the founder of the CultureCocoa ArtHouse and NY1’s Queens Person of the Week.

Less than a year ago, Goode-Morgan launched the "Hip-Hop Legacy of Queens" project.

Her goal was not only to honor hip-hop legends from the borough, but to also beautify the community and foster a love of art in young people.

Goode-Morgan teamed up with the South Jamaica Houses Community Center.

Twice a week and free of charge, she teaches 13 teens the art of painting murals -- one of which will soon be in the stairwell at the Center.

"It's a perfect outlet for kids to just, come to art class, whether you're mad or confused about something, I feel like people leave really happy and excited about what they've done here," said Halla Moda a  volunteer teaching artist.

"I never thought I could draw but if you put yourself to it, it doesn't take much. It kind of channels a part of you where you get to release your ideas and thoughts in a more vast way,” said Charlyne Gogoyi, a student with the project.

The first piece of the Hip-Hop Legacy Project is in Hollis . It pays homage to rap group Run DMC.

The next mural planned will honor "A Tribe Called Quest."

Goode-Morgan hopes the young artists feel a sense of pride as they work on the murals.

"For so many people in our neighborhood, they hear so much bad stuff about who we are and our identity. And I think seeing our triumphs and our success, even subconsciously being reminded that "this person came from where you came from" so if they were able to achieve, so can you," added Goode-Morgan.

And so for inspiring young people to leave a positive mark on the community, Jocelyn Goode-Morgan is our Queens Person of the Week.
