A once dark and graffitied pedestrian tunnel in Bellerose is now a work of art.

DOT and local officials, as well as students from th enearby St. Gregory School, unveiled a new 100 foot long mural on Friday.

It now decorates the walls of the underpass at 88th Road and the Cross Island Parkway.

Eighth grade students from St. Gregory painted the mural over the last two weeks as part of a service project.

"Before it was graffitied and kind of gross and stuff like that and so now it's very beautiful and it just shows people the positive sides of life and how to block out all the negative feelings that life can give you," said Frannie Pedersen, a student at St. Gregory the Great School.

"St. Gregory the Great School, they really helped inspire a project that truly transformed this tunnel into something that's vibrant and welcoming," said NYC DOT Queens Borough Commissioner Nicole Garcia.

The DOT funded the students' project.
