A special performance of the "Vagina Monologues" is making its way to correctional facilities throughout the state to raise awareness about domestic violence.
NY1's Clodagh McGowan caught a performance in Long Island City.

A diverse group of women is using drama to bring awareness to V-Day, a global movement to end violence against women and girls. They're performing Eve Ensler's award-winning play, The “Vagina Monologues” at correctional facilities across the state.
"It's liberating. It's a way for women to be able to speak about things we don't normally speak about. Culturally and traditionally this is taboo," said Sharon Richardson, an actor.

Richardson spent 20 years in jail for a domestic violence case.
On Tuesday she performed for a mostly male audience at the Fortune Society in Long Island City. The revolutionary play examines the highs and lows of the feminine experience, discussing topics like sex, love, rape and genital mutilation.

"It's political. And it raises consciousness. And this is a new generation of audience that will hear it today. And they have to be sensitized and they have to see the power of theater," said David Rothenberg, The Fortune Society’s founder.

The Fortune Society is a not-for-profit that provides “alternative to incarceration” programs for first-time offenders. They also help people who have been released from prison re-enter society. The performers say bringing the "Vagina Monologues" into different correctional facilities has been eye-opening.

"Young people are thirsty for knowledge and information. So, this was another information session, although there was a little giggles and things of that sort, it wasn't ignorant giggles. It was 'wow, that's interesting," said actor Vanda Seward.

And while the subject matter was at times uncomfortable for the audience, most walked away with a new appreciation and understanding.

"Difficult conversations in general, the ones that we shy away from, when we have them that's what allows us to grow more and mature," said Robert Savage, a group facilitator for the Fortune Society.
