A TV & film studio in Western Queens is taking steps to 'go green.'  NY1's Shannan Ferry gives us a look.

Sunlight, camera, action. Kaufman Astoria Studios is home to major TV and film productions like Sesame Street and the movie Birdman.

Soon enough, many Hollywood shoots taking place here will be powered by these solar panels.

"We, do consume an awful lot of power just by the very nature of the industry and what we do, and so being able to try and get some of that power from an alternative source we think is a good thing from the environmental perspective, a good thing just in general common sense," said Hal Rosenbluth, President/CEO, Kaufman Astoria Studios.

Solar One Energy just installed 373 solar panels on the roof of Stage K.

The 18,000 square foot building is one of nine production sites on the Kaufman Studios campus.

The panels are expected to source between 20 and 25% of the facility's energy every year.

"We channel from one panel to the next panel to the next panel, so that we build up a nice current, so it's not actually hooked up to one particularly thing like the lights, it's wherever it's being used, so if it's in the lobby, the exterior lighting," said Mickey Bennett, CEO of Solar One.

The panels aren't only useful on a hot sunny day, experts at Solar One say they're productive year round.

"When you think about it environmentally, you're saving 93 metric tons which is a lot of CO2, it's like taking 100 cars off the road for a year," said Bennett.

There will be more energy saved where that came from.

The panels are expected to generate power for more than 25 years.
