A dance competition brings the best out of kids at a school in Springfield Gardens.

Students at I.S. 59 marched around the neighborhood Wednesday looking to put an end to sexual assault.

The school is taking part in a "Step It Up" competition organized by the Department of Youth and Community Development.

School dance teams are not only being judged on their acts, but also how well they reach out to the community. The students chose to raise awareness on sexual assault.

"Not only can I dance well, which is what I do, but as I am marching right now I feel like I'm making a big difference, "said  student Mercedes Mieres.

"It helps to groom them as a child, like it helps to teach them how to become better adults and not follow what's going on now in the community," added organizer Dominque Danvers.

Students will perform at John Jay College, Saturday. If they win they'll perform at the Apollo Theater in June
