One local nonprofit is helping the community's Chinese elders live independently for longer.

Self Help members performed a dance to celebrate the installment of a new Chinese Advisory Council in Flushing Wednesday.

The council made up of community leaders is developing a virtual senior center to unite Chinese seniors who can't leave their houses. They are also providing affordable housing to seniors.

"The later you go to the nursing home, the happier life you will have, and Self Help, the way they do things, exactly can reach the goal." said Tai Wang, chairperson of the Chinese Advisory Council.

"I think that's going to be the important step for the Chinese Advisory Council, is to bring the concerns into the center and say hey this is what our Chinese community would really like to see." said City Councilman Paul Vallone of Queens.

Self Help is also creating a program for the younger Chinese generation to learn more about their elders. For more information on the organization visit www.selfhelp.net.
