A Hollis native received a prestigious teaching award for her work as a high school science teacher in Queens.

Shanaz Baksh is one of seven recipients of the seventh annual "Sloan Awards for Excellence in Teaching Science and Mathematics."

Baksh teaches science at the Queens High School for the Sciences at York College.

The awards recognize the city's public high school teachers who motivate students to expand their love for Science and Math.

"Winning an award or not winning, I'll never stop teaching. I love it so much. I love seeing my students be successful," Baksh said.

"I've had her all four years of high school, and she's always been there to help me with my problems, to help me with my schoolwork, and she's just there to talk to me whenever I need her, " said student Andrea Cadornigara.

Parents, students and administrators nominated each teacher.

The Fund for the City of New York gave each winner $5,000.
