A newborn left in a church Nativity scene in Richmond Hill last month has inspired a new city adoption campaign.

Administration for Children's Services Commissioner Gladys Carrión launched the push this month, using the hashtag “#adoptionjoy.”

After hearing about the newborn baby found in the Holy Child Jesus Church in November, she says several people contacted the parish and the city to try and adopt the baby. Carrion wanted to draw attention to other children awaiting adoption.

She says there are currently 11,000 children in foster care, and about 3,000 of them need permanent homes.

“We want New Yorkers to be aware that we have children that are waiting for loving homes, and it's really important that they have a permanent, loving home that will care for them, that will provide for them,” Carrión said.
