After a tragedy on the streets of Flushing, police and elected leaders are looking for ways to improve pedestrian safety.

NYPD leaders met with elected officials Monday at the 109th Police Precinct Station in Flushing to brainstorm ways to reduce the number of pedestrian deaths.

They spoke about several ideas, including teaching pedestrians and drivers about safety.

The meeting comes after last week's deadly hit-and-run on Main Street and Kissena Boulevard that killed a woman.

"It doesn't matter to a mother who is burying a young child what caused it. The child is not coming back. She's not going to see the child for a while. We want to prevent those kinds of incidents, " said Queens State Senator Toby Ann Stavisky.

Officials say they'll start by creating multilingual public service announcements and brochures about safety with warnings about potential fines for both pedestrians and drivers.
