It may not be the holiday season yet, but one community is already trying to save a Christmas tradition. NY1's Shannan Ferry filed this report.

Joe Aiello says some of his best childhood memories were made here at the Glendale Veterans Triangle.

It's where the neighborhood hosts its annual Christmas Tree Lighting Celebration.

"It makes you forget your, your problems and say this is world - this is happiness," said Aiello.

So, when the lifelong Glendale resident found out the more than 50 year-old tradition wasn't happening this year - he knew he had to do something.  The event is usually paid for by the Glendale Chamber of Commerce - but declining enrollment will make it impossible for them to afford this year.

"A lot of the older members weren't paying their dues, or just simply didn't want to be involved anymore so that hurt us," said Patricia Gatt, Interim President of the Glendale Chamber of Commerce.

So, in hopes of keeping the iconic celebration alive - Aiello and other members of the Glendale Kiwanis Club teamed up with the chamber to start fundraising for the event.

"You know, a lot of people need to get involved, and to have Kiwanus come and help us - that was tremendous," explained Werner Lehner, who owns Zum Stammtisch Restaurant and Pork Store.

Along with the tree and its installation, they also need money for festivities including a visit from Santa Claus, free toys for hundreds of kids, refreshments, and live entertainment.

The Kiwanis Club has raised about 2,000 dollars but they need more than 4,000 in order to keep it going.  They sent out letters to local residents asking them to consider contributing.

"It's just one of those things that just has to keep happening - because it brings everyone together, it's so beautiful, the looks on the kids faces are just precious," said Gatt.
