A local library is one step closer to getting a new state of the art building.
The Far Rockaway branch of Queens library will be demolished to make way for a new $29 million building at the same location.
Community leaders announced the new plans on Wednesday.
Borough President Melinda Katz had previously allocated $22 million towards the project.
Councilman Donovan Richards and city council speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito recently secured over 6 million to finally put the plan in motion.
"It needs to be an inspiring space that matches the level of enthusiasm and excitement that goes on here." said Bridget Quinn-Carey, Interim President and CEO of Queens Library.
Councilmember Donovan Richards added, "This was a hurricane Sandy hub, this is where our children, our seniors come, people who are looking for job placement come, every day. So it is a very essential place, very important place for Rockaway residents, and I am just happy to be a part of rebuilding it."
The library will stay open in a nearby space during construction. The project is expected to be completed by late 2019.
