A former hotel in Queens is being transformed into a homeless shelter.

The former Clarion Hotel in Queens, which has 169 units, will be the first new shelter to open this year.

Last year, the city opened 23 shelters, including 20 for families with children.

A spokesperson for the mayor's office says there's been an uptick of homeless families entering the shelter system this summer.

They say this new facility will help city meet that demand.

The de Blasio administration says it is investing $1 billion over the next four years to help the city's homeless.
