An act of vandalism in Corona is making it harder to feed some home bound seniors. NY1’s Clodagh McGowan filed the following report.

Glass still covers the parking lot at the Florence T. Smith Senior Center located at 102nd Street and 34th Avenue in Corona.
The staff was in for a nasty surprise Wednesday morning when they found six of their vehicles vandalized and the windows smashed in.

"We don't know the reason for this, beause we have no reason someone would come and break so many vehicles," said Deborah Barnes, the director of senior services.

Five of the trucks are used for the center's meals on wheels program--which delivers hot meals to home bound seniors five days a week.

"Some of them don't have families or family members to come visit. So they really rely on these meals very much," said homebound coordinator, Valerio Sleur.

Surveillance video shows a man wandering around the parking lot starting at 7:40pm Tuesday evening. Eventually, he finds what looks like a brick which you can see him using to smash the windows. Staff members say nothing was stolen from the vehicles but some coolers were thrown out of one truck.

"I guess he seen there was nothing valuable maybe that's what caused him to destroy more of the property," said Sleur.

The video shows the vandal finishing up his path of destruction just around 8:30pm, stopping for a cigarette break and then trying his luck opening the doors of cars parked on the other side of the building. Seniors say they still can't believe the news.

"Why would they want to damage the truck that takes the food out to the people? I can't understand it," said Josephine Smith, a Corona resident.

Staff members say with the heat advisory in effect it's especially important for seniors to receive their meals. But with trucks out of commission, it's putting extra stress on their drivers.

"The vehicle is out running longer, it's getting heated. And the meals are on the truck, so this is very hard for us," said Barnes.

The NYPD says no arrests have been made at this time and detectives are investigating the incident.
