NY1 VIDEO: A Rockaway Beach skate park destroyed by Hurricane Sandy is getting a little TLC. As a crew is working to get a stretch of the Rockaway Beach boardwalk ready for its Memorial Day opening, a much smaller group of volunteers is giving a beloved local skate park a face lift. Steven McClernon has skated here on Beach 91st Street since the park first opened back in 2004. He says after Hurricane Sandy destroyed it, local kids were left without a place to skate. That's where Jimmy Dowd, the co-owner of Boarders Surf and Skate shop came in. After getting the thumbs up from the Parks Department, Dowd and his business partner raised about $15,000 and built new wooden ramps for the skate park. Volunteers from New York Cares worked alongside the skaters Saturday to give the park a fresh coat of paint and get it ready for the summer season.
