More than 2,500 students joined friends, family and faculty Thursday morning to honor Alumni Andrew Goodman during a special commencement ceremony at Queens College.

Goodman was a civil rights activist killed in 1964. His death called national attention to U.S. racial injustice in the South. Goodman's brother, David, accepted an honorary degree on his brother's behalf.

"The honor is certainly a personal one, but also it's important to remember this an American story - it belongs to America, not the families. It belongs to Queens College, every college, every person, “said David Goodman, brother of the honored alumnus.

It was also a big accomplishment for QC. Its graduates received half of this year's New York City Fulbright awards.
