Hundreds of high school students participated in track and field events today in Washington Heights.

Some of the city's best track stars took part in the 112th annual Public Schools Athletic League Championships at the Armory.

Students competed in a variety of indoor track and field events including pole vault and running relays.

Runners and coaches gave us tips for anyone just starting out.

"You have to discipline yourself you so can keep working toward your goal everyday," says runner Jacob Hoffman.

"Do what we call like a jog walk jog walk, no more than a mile and do that for about a week or so. Maybe the following weekend towards the end of the week you want to increase just a little bit more," says coach Jeff Teta.

All the events at the Armory were co-sponsored by the New York Road Runners club.
