City University of New York students showed a mix of optimism and skepticism for the incoming administration at an NY1-organized inauguration watch party in Manhattan on Friday. NY1's Ruschell Boone filed the following report.

Some were Donald Trump supporters. Many were not. But they all watched his inauguration with an open mind.

"It was great," said one person at the watch party. "There was a lot of controversy along with who they were going to get to perform, and it looks like they did a good job."

With their eyes glued to the television at the CUNY Graduate Center- and NY1-sponsored watch party, there was little discussion during Trump's speech. But later, there was no shortage of opinions.

"It was exciting to see, to feel the atmosphere," said one person at the watch party.

"He says the government is now officially for the people and by the people. But if you take a look at his cabinet picks, they don't really represent the average American. The average American does not have billions of dollars," said another.

"Not much to like about the speech," said a third. "I think it's really concerning that millions of people could lose their health insurance, that this is a president who's talked about setting up systems to get rid of Islamic people."

The main complaint, the students said, was that the new president simply didn't inspire them, and that his speech sounded too much like he was back on the campaign trail.

"I was hoping he was going to bring the unity in his speech, but I felt a lot of separation," one person at the watch party said.

"I really wish that there was more of a personal effect, give us, the nation as a whole, a bit of hope," said another.

They also wanted him to acknowledge the concerns of protesters. But now that the inauguration is over, they say it's time for action.

"If President Trump would be able to deliver on his promises and give opportunities for all Americans, including minorities, including refugees who come here for the better hope, I think that would be the unity that we're all looking for," said one person at the watch party.

"If he goes on and completes what he promised earlier in his electoral campaign, then it could be scary for some groups. However, if he does actually use it to the benefit of those populations, I think it could be a positive," said another.
