There is a growing hotel rivalry on the Caribbean island of Anguilla. Time Warner Cable News’ Valarie D’Elia explains in this Travel With Val report.

Since the newly reimagined Malliouhana reopened late last year, after a top to bottom makeover, the hip quotient on this beachy Caribbean island has gone through the roof.

The magnificently madeover Malliouhana has always had a friendly rivalry with another one of the island’s stalwarts, the Moorish style Cap Juluca.

If you’re an Anguilla aficionado, than you’ve dug your barefoot heels into one side of the talcum powder sand or another, with a divided loyalty.

I prefer the laid back, unpretentious luxury of Cap Juluca, with a crescent shaped beach that is the closest I have to come to heaven on Earth at a resort.

Unfortunately, Cap Juluca has run into some money and management troubles and on a recent media visit, I was brokenhearted to find a few of its beachfront villas shuttered, victim to a bankruptcy battle.

If you compare it mosaic-to-mosaic with Malliouhana now—Cap Juluca looks a bit dated, although it has made its share of superficial tweaks to its guest rooms.

Not until it takes all its rooms up to the standard of the completely juiced up Jonquil suite, with fabulous features, and blow-you-away-bathrooms, will Cap Juluca have a shot at regaining the island’s top perch.

While Cap Juluca has the superior beach, Malliouhana’s new infinity pools are pure liquid glamour.  CJ rules on the fitness front though, adding two free yoga classes per day in March & April —and every morning but Sunday, activities director Cardigan Conner leads killer beach workouts with a killer smile.

CJ is offering five nights for the price of four in April & May.
