Straphangers have plenty of opinions about the subway proposal the MTA revealed Tuesday. NY1's Lori Chung spoke to riders at the Union Square station and filed the following report.

The MTA has a plan to change the perception of the subway.

Commuters are glad to hear that improving the signal and track system to keep trains running on time is one of the top priorities.

"Sometimes, the train will get delayed, and if I'm in a rush, it's very inconvenient," said one commuter.

On the crowded L line, the MTA will try to ease the crush by testing a pilot program to reduce the number of seats on some L train cars to accommodate more standing straphangers, a strategy that seemed to garner mixed reaction.

"That is just a recipe for adding more misery to people's commute because people want to sit down. I think that's a normal expectation," one commuter said.

"I wouldn't mind, but I know I'm lucky to be in good health," said another commuter. "I think you also have to make the subway accessible for people with disabilities or elderly people. And so seating does have its advantages."

One part of the plan to keep trains moving and riders happy seemed to answer one commuter's main complaint.

"The biggest thing, I think, is the ability to take care of sick passengers. That's the one thing I can never understand," the commuter said.

Chairman Joe Lhota says the MTA will more than double the number of stations with dedicated EMTs to handle emergencies.

"I'm for that having some kind of change," the commuter said.

A campaign to teach commuters the dangers of littering is also on the agenda.

But some say if the MTA wants to modernize and improve the subway system to meet the needs of commuters, officials have to think bigger.

"I feel like they just have to build more lines at this point," said one commuter. "There needs to be more because more people are getting pushed out of Manhattan. More people are living in the boroughs further out. So we need more."

One common opinion among many of the commuters NY1 spoke with is that a revamp of the subway system is long overdue.
