Members of the champion 1986 Mets lead off their Memorial Day weekend with a visit to the VA hospital in Manhattan.

The event was part of a weekend-long celebration honoring the 30th anniversary of the Amazin's last World Series championship.

Some of the champion Mets in attendance included Mookie Wilson, Sid Fernandez, and Tim Teufel.

The players fielded questions from fans, signed autographs, and thanked the veterans for their service.

"Oh it was really great to meet them, because I was deployed during the '86 World Series, so I didn't get to see a lot of it," said one veteran. "So I think it's really great that they did this for the veterans and came here. It's one of those 'never say die' teams and the spirit really fits in, especially on Memorial Day, to do this for us."

"It just brings us a lot of joy to give a little bit back to the men who serve our country," said former Mets outfielder Tim Teufel. "The men and women who serve our country."

The Mets will have a larger celebration of the '86 team at Citi Field Saturday, honoring the team at a ceremony before tonight's game against the Dodgers.
