Community members in Brownsville gathered to remember a Brooklyn mother of 13 kids, shot dead several years ago while trying to protect other children from gunfire.

The Corner of Pitkins Avenue and Watkins Street has been renamed Zurana Horton Way.

Back in 2011, police say Horton tried to protect a group of school children from a gang shooting, and ended up being killed in the crossfire.

Her family says this moment has been a long time coming.

"I feel great, this is a wonderful feeling, and I just can’t describe it right now. This is great! Yeah, the glasses yeah, I don't know what to do anymore, this is it, this is it. This is what I have been waiting for and God bless me and God bless everybody that came, and everybody that's here, thank you!" Horton’s mother Denise Peace said.

The gunman, Andre Lopez, is serving life in prison for killing Horton and injuring other innocent bystanders.
