NEW YORK - As more skyscrapers re-shape the Manhattan skyline, one city councilman is pushing a bill to create a task force to study how building shadows affect city parks.

Mark Levine says many blocks in Manhattan only see direct sunlight for a few hours, and the additional shadows from soaring buildings are endangering many parks.

He says some new skyscrapers will cast shadows that reach as far as the Great Lawn on the East Side, which would affect the Central Park Zoo, and many of the park’s ball fields.

The task force would look into the potential consequences of long shadows and make recommendations to the mayor, which could include changes to some construction projects.
