CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Charlotte Hornets owner Michael Jordan is stepping in to defend LeBron James after a presidential tweet.

  • Jordan released a statement saying he supports what James is doing
  • James says the president is trying to divide the country
  • The president tweeted about James hours before a rally in Ohio

Friday night, President Trump tweeted about the athlete who just opened a public school in his hometown of Akron, Ohio.

During the interview with Don Lemon, James says he believes the president is trying to divide the country.

"What I noticed over the last few months, that he's kind of used sport to kind of divide us and that's something that I can't relate to because I know that sports was the first time that I was around someone white, you know. And I got an opportunity to see them and learn about them and they got an opportunity to learn about me. We became very good friends and I was like 'oh wow, this is all because of sports,'" he said.

Jordan released a statement through a spokesman saying, "I support LeBron James. He's doing an amazing job for his community."

James later tweeted about the children attending his school for 240 at-risk students. He promises free tuition to the University of Akron when they graduate.
