NEW YORK - Governor Andrew Cuomo on Friday announced new flood protections for tunnels around the city.

The governor said that new flood barriers have been installed on the Hugh L. Carey Tunnel and the Queens Midtown Tunnel.

The construction of the new 25-ton flood gates finished nine months ahead of schedule.

Other new additions include a drainage system that will prevent and protect tunnels from future flooding.

"I can't tell you how many emergencies that I have been to as governor where they always say, this is a one in 500 year occurrence. Yeah, except it happens every other month and people who deny climate change, you are denying reality," Cuomo said.

The two tunnels were badly damaged six years ago, when Hurricane Sandy ravaged parts of New York.
